Mission: S02 Episode 4: The Avian Flew the Cukoo's Nest (Main Story)
Location: USS Tomcat/Various
Timeline: Mission 5 Day 2

- Captain’s Ready Room -

Dodd arrived in the captain’s ready room and signalled to enter.

“Enter,” Somers said and in walked her Chief Engineer. “Please be seated Mr Dodd, you can talk in front of the Ensign, now speak to me,” Somers said.

“Thank you for meeting me so soon after departure from the station,” Dodd replied. “I want to get right to selecting the away team. 1st Lieutenant Delfin and Ensign Thompson have volunteered to be on the team. I am not sure, but I think Dr Cahill also voiced interest in joining the mission. Also, I would like Ensign Tjaansz to be on the team if she would like to be,” Dodd stated that as he hoped she would want to go. “I am open to whom you feel would be best to fill out the team beyond that. I was looking at seven to eight members counting myself. Lt. Delfin voiced concern for having a secondary marine member on the away team. “

*nodding as he spoke* when Dodd had finished Somers spoke up “You will need to confirm with Doctor Cahill on that, as for the rest I am good with it, you will be in Command of the Away Team Lieutenant Dodd, take basic provisions and equipment, also a couple of extra transmitters would not go amiss, if the area is as bad as reports say, then you might need them. So, Mr Dodd how do you feel actually leading an away mission, none are the same?” Somers asked.

“Ma’am, I feel I can do this. I just want to be sure that my team is aware of what Starfleet expects out of this mission as well as what I need out of them to accomplish this mission.” Dodd replied. oO I only hope to do the best I can and make the captain proud as well. Oo “I will get with Doctor Cahill and see if she wants to be involved in the mission. But I was hoping that you can make recommendations for rest of my team.”

“The new marines that have joined recently I cannot recommend as I do not know them or their capabilities yet, I would say, Major Donovan, she is a tracker and scout, but you would need to ask her. Ensign K'Muss has returned as a Science Officer, he was originally Marine and then Security Officer, so I would say take him with you, you will need a pilot, for that you have Donovan or First Lieutenant Joseph Tabor. Lieutenant Delfin being CoS also could be a good choice, but you will need to make it clear that if it does not involve Security or Tactical concerns, she is to follow your orders.

There was a beep sound from Dodd’s PADD. He glanced down to notice a message from Doctor Cahill that stated she would like to be the medical member of the away team for the current mission.

“Okay, ma’am,” Dodd replied to what the captain has stated about Lt. Delfin. “I would like to request Donovan as the pilot and secondary marine presence on the team. Ensign K'Muss is welcome if you recommend him. He has the experience of the other positions he has held, and he could benefit the team. I did just get a message from Doctor Cahill and she is requesting to be the medical presence on the away team. I am okay with that if you are.”

she looked at Dodd, it is your away team Lieutenant, I will leave you to contact Major Donovan, but I would suggest you assign Delfin to your team also as she is also the CoS and she may have experience, but not with us, so she needs it, as for the rest of the team, it is up to you as for the CMO if she wishes to be on the team then she is yours” Somers said.

“That would make the away team consist of Doctor Cahill, Lt. Delfin, Ensign Thompson, Ensign Tjaansz, Ensign K'Muss, Major Donovan, Petty Officer Machado and myself. I would then like to have the smaller teams consist of Major Donovan, Doctor Cahill, Ensign K'Muss and PO Machado who will all depart for the ruins to investigate and then Ensign Tjaansz, Ensign Thompson, Lt. Delfin and myself who will depart to retrieve the source of the transmission at the location of the old mines.” Dodd stated.

*Nods* “As I said how the team is set up is all up to you, consider this a leadership test Lieutenant, leading a Department is one thing, leading an away team is another. Also, some advice do not forget to ask for opinions you may not end up using them, but it never hurts to listen to what is being said, you will have to rely on your team, so best not to alienate them” Somers said with a wink “I would also suggest keeping the Away team small, possibly cut by at least two, but that is just my view. Now anything else you have on this matter?” she asked and while she was waiting for Dodd to respond she looked over to Tjaansz “Ensign, how much longer you have to work there?” she asked the engineer.

“Okay, ma’am, I think I could narrow the team to six members. Delfin, Cahill and K'Muss to the city ruins and then Tjaansz, Thompson and myself to the mine ruins. That would be my backup option for the team. I can still get all the same exploration and data collection with this smaller team but wouldn’t want to go less than that.” Dodd responded to the captain’s statement.

“Very well, I will leave the finer details up to you Lieutenant, is there anything else beyond the Away Team you need to speak about?” Somers asked.

By this time Tjaansz had left the Ready Room to continue on with her duties so she missed her name being mentioned for the Away Team.

“I appreciate the chance to get a leadership opportunity outside of engineering. I will keep you posted as I go. I don’t know of anything I need to talk about. Do you have anything for me.”

“I got nothing further Lieutenant, as the task is complete you are dismissed,” Somers said.

Dodd then bids farewell to the captain and then exited her ready room and headed to his office to prepare details for his team members and to get the work orders prepared for when he is able for the ship.

For a short time afterwards, she caught up on some filing that she had been putting off for far too long.

- Swiftpaws’ Den -

Sheela kicking back in her Den, relaxing as she watched the monitor screen flicker through various feeds she was able to tap in during this soft probe to check out the ship’s crew activities and seeing what they were up to. What she was looking for was anyone’s guess, but on the sharp lookout for subversive activities that would be detrimental to the functioning of the smooth operation of the ship and crew. She reached out to the side table that held her snacks and drinks next to the recliner she relaxed upon. Since she was on second shift for the bridge as Communication, she had time to ply one aspect of her tradecraft.

Grabbing a hand full of cheese puffs, she watched as the scene on the screen changed to another section of the ship. She nibbled on a cheese puff as her eyes moved to another screen with text scrolling just slow enough to read, yet fast enough to cover a lot of section.

- Holodeck -

Ensign Thompson was on the holodeck brushing up on his target practice. He was quite advanced and doing well on level 10. 23 out of 25 was pretty respectable for a Science officer or anyone else for that matter. He had just come from the Science Officers Orientation briefing given by Commander Sterling. It was pretty basic stuff considering he had just had this same sort of training instilled at him at the Academy for 4 years. He guessed correctly that Ensign K'Muss had transferred from another department, so it was more for his benefit than anyone else’s. Still, he had hoped to be assigned to the next away mission and was anxious to find out. He wondered if he had overstepped his bounds by volunteering for the mission but like the saying goes fortune favours the bold.
