Mission: S03 Ep 02 Trouble in the Sticks (Main Post) Galen IV Phase 1
Location: Briefing Room Tomcat
Timeline: S3 Mission 3 MD 01

[ON]

Finalizing the assignments…

After giving time for the crew’s reactions the Captain continued “now all away teams will be in civilian clothing the longer it takes for the infected to realize we are there, the better, but you will need to keep your hand phasers and commbadges concealed.” *beat* “Okay, now onto assignments for when we arrive *looks at the CAG* Serina when we get back to the helm set a heading for Galen IV, *looks at Sterling* Maia assemble a science team, armed of course and I want your team to take readings, see if you can find anything that may help us out and give us a heads up take a medic with your team to Maia,” she paused.

“Aye Captain,” Maia said.

“Captain they control the planetary defence grid. We will need to find a way to get to the planet. They can fire on us long before the USS Tomcat can get within transporter range.” Maia advised.

“Yes, this is why the Tomcat will remain out of range of the orbital defences and the away teams will use shuttles” the Captain answered looking at Sterling.

“Captain we had something else in mind,” Maia stated, “Shuttles could be shot down too…”

*thinks a moment* "The shuttles can be fitted out with stealth *looks at Dodd* "Remy work with Serina and get the shuttles kitted out for sensor reflection and low energy consumption, but if that does not work a shuttle will have a better chance of landing as it will not be seen as being any danger and remember they are going to want to spread their number" the Captain said.

"No worries, will be happy to get to work on modifying the stealth sheeting for the shuttles we have used on a past mission," Dodd replied. "I will get a team together and once I get to engineering and will let Serina know when all is ready for us to collaborate."

“Understood Captain,” Serina said swiftly. Knowing it was going to be tricky just getting there, but not being detected was the catch.

*nods before continuing* “now then Lieutenant Parker I want you to assign some security personnel to all away teams, all away team personnel are to have their hand phasers set on heavy stun as I do not want any deaths if I can avoid it. If you must fire your weapons you may need to use two to render someone unconscious. However, be aware there may be some uninfected out and about; they will be the distraction and will be scared so please be mindful. Now any questions about the first team before I move on with the assignments?” She asked.

“Perhaps Serina and I can come up with a way to get to the planet without putting the ship in danger,” Maia suggested.

Parker nodded at the order; he had assumed that security would have a heavy presence with this particular away mission.

Dr Cahill smiled, “No captain. Ready when needed.”

Iria spoke up, “Am I correct in guessing that you want Intelligence to search out for the Queen and any possible infected for medical to have access to research the parasites?”

*Looks at the CIO* “Yes Please, the more information we have the better we can react” *looks at Serina* “Lieutenant Donovan you will need to drop the ship outside of Galen IV defence perimeter, possibly get us behind the planets moon. All away teams will be equipped with type II hand phasers and will go down in shuttles.” *Looks at Parker* “Cody all away team personnel will need to have their hand phasers set to the highest stun setting. They will also need to be observant and casually look for the gills at the back of the ones they interact with, remember there will be uninfected people there who will most likely be scared and will not want to give anything away. What we do know is the Bluegills work slowly and methodically, they will want to remain hidden until they are ready.” the Captain finished.

*looks at Capt. Somers* “Understood Captain. I will bring the ship out on the backside of the moon, so we are not detected at all”, Serina said smartly.

“I will make sure the phasers are set before they leave the ship personally,” Parker said as he made a note on his PADD.

*Nods and looks at her XO* “Maia you and your science team will need to work with intel and Medical to find a counteragent. Remember this initial mission is fact-finding on the bombings. Cody, Sergeant Major Kildare is to be assigned to the investigative team. He is our demolitions expert and will be able to tell us what type of explosive device was used. Also, when Intelligence has the information assemble a security detail to single out and surround the parasite queen and you have the green light to kill the queen’s host, so we have covered all departments, I think. The Rifles will be the Cavalry should you need it.

“A counteragent, Captain?” Maia asked. Is it possible there must be some reason they don’t like Cardassians?” Maia continued.

Lamia’s heart skipped a beat at the thought of Chris going off the ship, she’d have to learn how to cope with the worry and keep a professional demeanour.

“As mentioned Commander, there is something in Cardassian biochemistry that inhibits the Bluegills, I believe that any deterrent will stem from analyzing such things, I would suggest a way to synthesize such a thing have Medical help you with the finer points,” Captain Somers said.

Parker made a note that Cardassian was immune, he would double-check the security roster and the weapons qualified crew, to see if there were at least two Cardassians onboard.

“My team is already looking into it, Captain,” Maia said.

As this was going on Colonel Somers was pacing back and forth like a caged animal, she was not listening to the questions and answers as she was not being addressed, so she was thinking on recent events.

“Remember the infected people on that planet will be watching the away teams like hawks, so just treat it as a standard event. Remember to assign some security personnel to the science team to Cody, but when you guys get planet-side go through the debris with a fine-tooth comb while the science team scans for other signs. Send all readings straight up to the Science, Intel. and Security stations on the Tomcat so the data can be studied. Now. Any more questions before I dismiss you all?” the Captain asked.

Lamia was normally one of the first to jump on the away team bandwagon, but this time she kept her mouth firmly shut. She wasn’t afraid to go if needed but she wasn’t going to jump into the unknown just yet either. “Captain, is there anything you require the telepaths and empaths onboard to do?” She looked towards Dodd and Iria then back to Somers.

*Looks at Lamia* “going from past information, the bluegills must have used some form of telepathic link, as they seem to have a hive mind, so try looking for the wavelength frequency. Perhaps that can help as a deterrent” the Captain answered.

“Yes, Captain” Lamia nodded looking towards Cahill as the Doctor spoke.

“Perhaps I should consider going to provide medical for the science team. This will give me a chance to do some medical research on the Bluegills with discretion. This will maybe help with ways to better detect them and aid in finding the Queen. Aldana can handle things in sickbay until I return.”

“You will need to speak to Commander Sterling as she will be assigning the science team members, and Lieutenant Parker the other team, so speak to her about that Commander,” the captain said to Cahill.

“Captain, as much as I wasn’t planning on asking, I’d like permission to join an away team and get closer. It’ll help to find whatever wavelength these bluegills communicate on.” Lamia looked at Somers.

*Looks at Lamia* “again speak nicely with Commander Sterling on that, I may say what department does which, but when team leaders are assigned any away team choices are their responsibility” the Captain said.

*nodding* “Of course Captain.”

Dodd would be willing to join any away team if selected as he was willing to do what was needed for the mission and the ship. However, he would not mind starting on the ship working to help the other departments get a grip on what was needed for the success of the overall situation of the mission.

“Lamia you’re with me,” Sterling said.

“Aye Commander” Lamia nodded.

Dr Cahill replied, “Aye Captain.” She stood by awaiting orders. “Aldana will go and I will stay on the Tomcat to continue my research, Captain, I will need to stay on board to set up preventative screenings to protect the Tomcat and crew from the possibility of Bluegills getting on board.

The Kazarite looked between the Captain, the XO, and hir direct CO. S/he was beginning to feel a bit like an old wooden toy s/he had once heard about, something like a yo-yo or whatever… first, s/he was going then s/he wasn’t, then s/he was. S/he’d assumed that hir abilities would be considered a valuable asset in detecting the parasites, even though they might not be considered telepathy in the traditional sense, these parasites were no doubt animals, and s/he could mentally communicate with all animals.

Aldana rested hir gaze on the lovely XO since she was responsible for assigning the teams after all. “I would just like to remind you I can mentally speak to all animals. I feel that it would be of benefit for each crewmember with some form of psi potential to be assigned one-per-team to strategically spread out to have the best potential in detecting these beings.”

Dr Cahill replied, “You will be going Doctor Aldana, I need to set up defences to try to prevent the Bluegills from getting on the Tomcat. If they manage to get access to a ship they can spread out and be harder to contain. That is why I need to remain on the Tomcat till the safeguards are in place to allow for screenings of returning personnel to be sure they are not infected, and isolate anyone that may be infected should they return to the ship.”

“I’m sure engineering can work on trying to find some technical way of hindering their ability to communicate, or perhaps ‘sour the milk’ as it were… make it so they won’t want to infect someone,” Taggert offered

“Lieutenant Aldana, the Bluegills are not telepathic to uninfected, if you are not a host then any form of telepathy will not work, empaths are a stop-gap as it is not easy to detect cold calm emotions in a sea of panic, it would be like trying to swim up a fast-flowing river with only one hand” The Captain responded to Aldana’s suggestion.

*looks at Taggert* “exactly Lieutenant, that is what I have assigned teams to do, as not much research or anything else has been done much on the way of these Bluegills” Captain Somers said.

“If we are going to use shuttles then we are going to have to somehow figure a way to mask our sensor profile or use some type of stealth ability. I might have an idea or two on that,” Serina said.

“If I might add, the specifications are still in the system for the stealth panels we outfitted a couple of shuttles with on a past mission. I could get a team of engineers together to start to tweaking those specs and replicating new panels if you wish?” Dodd added to the conversation as he had done this once before and knew it would benefit the mission.

Aldana tried to hide hir reaction to the captain’s comment. S/he wasn’t easy to offend, so s/he wasn’t familiar with the sensation, but s/he’d thought s/he might be. ~Clearly, he doesn’t understand how my abilities work.~ S/he shared with Sombra, ~I provide the link, you just have to use it. You’re not inherently telepathic yourself.~ Aldana felt distracted, and s/he might have forgotten to guard their communication… if Dodd or Lamia were “listening.”

Sombra squirmed, setting his chin in Alpha’s lap, ~love. You. Peas.~

Aldana fought from snickering out-loud and fidgeted with Sombra’s head gently. ~That’s “peace” goof…~

~Am distracted-ing Alpha. This one, job. Am good Doug?~

~You’re right, yes, good buoy.~ “Goof…” Aldana whispered.

Dodd had made a smirk on his face as if he had seen a comedy scene in a production of some sort. He knew there was a bit 0f chatter between Aldana and Sombra, but the exact wording was off, but he felt the emotions and it made him smirk. He was starting to hone his abilities and soon he could likely communicate with Sombra and Luuna as their thoughts were in some ways easier to pick up on, but their language was what was needed to be understood.

Parker continued taking notes as the conversation flowed around him, he had been able to pick up the majority of the expectations and needs for his security teams. He felt comfortable and ready to proceed.

Nicci gave a nod as she got her reply, and took the last sip of her coffee, ready to get to work and make herself useful.

Iria made more notes on her PADD and she glanced up as the briefing continued, she saw Remy’s face and wondered what he found amusing but she would ask him later to not add another distraction to the briefing.

When all had finished the Captain nodded to the Colonel and she left the briefing room, now she turned her attention to the those who remain “okay people if there is nothing else, you are dismissed, you have your assignments, go get ready” the Captain said as they all stood up and began to leave the room, she remained a little longer just in case anyone had something to ask her.

Lamia stood and exited the room, first things first she needed to catch Colonel Somers. She had mentioned seeing her when the meeting was over. Then she’d go and change into civilian clothing ready to join Commander Sterling’s away party. With that in mind, she headed to find Somers.

Dodd rose from his chair and grabbed his PADD and mug and turned to leave the room. As he turned, he noticed Walon and got a warm tingly feeling that only she could make him feel. He was going to head to his office and see what he could do to help his engineers be able to pursue other interests in helping other departments.

“Captain, I think that maybe using the stealth panels on the shuttles would be a good idea. It would at least give them a better chance of getting there without exposure. Those orbital platforms will pick up the shuttles and there goes the whole shebang, and loss of life,” Serina said before she left.

"Cannot argue with that" the Captain simply said.

Iria filed out of the briefing room, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts from the mission what she needed to prepare for and her realization that she was going to be doing a lot more paperwork than before. She sighed softly and shook her head as she walked on.

With nothing else to do the last officer filed out of the room, leaving the Captain to think a moment before she too headed to the bridge.
