S03 Ep 03 Trouble in the Sticks UXSys 659842 (Incidentals) Phase 2
Location: Various

- Engineering -
Dodd walked in the main engineering doors and was looking around. He saw his team of engineering staff hard at work. He knew that Taggert was keeping the cogs in proper working condition.
He walked up to the young woman and paused to admire her dedication to detail.
"You are doing an excellent job." Dodd stated firmly. "I was hoping I could talk to you in my office."
"Oh, chief," she said as she turned around. "Thanks, I appreciate it. I was just working on tuning a bone-conduction headset for away missions while the subspace field diagnostic runs. This kind of headset would be more useful for private conversations than our combadges blaring out like speakers on missions. "
The two then enter Dodd's office and he seals the doors.
"I am so lucky to have you as my assistant chief." Dodd started. "You make it possible for me to branch out and get to other facets of the ship. However, I will still find it hard to be on the bridge when I feel I should be here. Anyway, I hope you are doing well?"
"Doing well as I can," Nicci replied. "How about you chief? Branching out, learning new things, must be exciting right? That's why I got into engineering. You never know what you can do till you have to cold restart a warp engine in thirty minutes, right?" she chuckled a little.
"I certainly understand. I love engineering as I feel like I can work wonders in this role. But I am looking to gain my knowledge." Dodd replied. "I need to talk to you about a few things that need to be kept on the down low."
Nicci nodded in agreement. "Sure, Lt. Given my background, I'm sure you know I can keep a secret," she smiled. Dodd knew who she was and what she used to be before her 'experience' with the Orions.
"I know you will be picked to go on an away mission, but I have two tasks to do on this mission besides being on the bridge." Dodd stated. "I will have Pril and Nelson working to modify the maintenance drones to act as a means to deliver a chemical or biological agent on the hostile planet once the compound is ready for deployment. The other is testing new EV suits that are composed of nanotech that sort of makes the suit seem alive and able to react to the wearer. I am to get the away teams on this mission to test them out."
"Pril and Nelson are good. Teela would be a good choice to help them program it, if you don't mind me suggesting so," Nicci added. "New EV suits? That sounds interesting, depending on how it interfaces and its safety. I'd love to hear more about it."
"Great. I am happy to share." Dodd replied. "I have been in league with an researcher at Starfleet R & D, and I have mentioned it would be better to update our EV suits." Dodd reached for a PADD to hand to Taggert. "I am very fond of old earth comic books and while I prefer certain ones, I do dabble in a wide array of titles. There was a character called Iron Man and he had a suit that was fictionally constructed from Nanotech. I figured we have that technology so why not try it for real. I contacted my friend and he got on it and even worked it out to hybridize Borg Nano-Probes with non-sentient Nanites and with the help of the Sentient Nanite Society on Kavros, he was able to make my idea into reality. They have been tested in basic environments and thus now are ready for field testing."
"That's pretty incredible, Chief," Nicci responded, though the hairs on the back of her neck were standing up. While Commander Samantha Diedrich was really nice and helped her out a bit, she was very wary of anything Borg. "Are we sure those Borg nanites aren't going to try to assimilate someone? I've heard some stories of just one getting out and causing havoc...but those could just be tall tales the enlisted tell each other. What's the advantage over a regular EV suit? Does it self-repair suit tears? I read Captain Worf had an issue on a mission on the Enterprise-E..."
"The Kavisian Sentient Nanite Colony worked with the Nanoprobes and heled to engineer the Borg programming to make the nanotech more compliant for use as a EV suit fibers that can self-repair or replicate for mission purposes." Dodd replied. "I would not consider it if there was any doubt about the Borg technology. But the Kavisian Nanites have help to make the technology and have assured that the nanotech could not become sentient nor could it assimilate the wearer."
"I sincerely hope so, Chief," she said with a hint of worry in her voice. "But you said you have two things you need to do? And I'm going on an away mission?"
"I wanted to get you to test the new suit on your away mission if you need an EV suit. Also, I am having Pril and Nelson work to modify our maintenance drones to act as a deployment system for the next planet when we have to exterminate the bloody bluegills." Dodd replied. "I also have to work on leaving Engineering more and leave the department in your very capable and overqualified care. So I know you are leaving on the next away team, but know I have full faith in you as not only an engineer but as a competent officer and friend."
"Now you're flattering me, Chief," Nicci smiled. "Pril and Nelson do good work, it's good they're working on that.
Let's hope that I won't need an EVA suit on this mission, but I can bring it along just in case," Nicci said to her direct superior. "I appreciate your trust, sir. I won't let you down."
"Great, I know you already have a subdermal transponder implanted so that will help you out. Just remember to be as naked as possible when you use the new NEVS as the more skin contact the better it works." Dodd responded. "Good luck on your away team and I know you will bring pride to Engineering and the Tomcat."
Dodd then gave Taggert his smile of pride and watched her turn to leave his office.
