Mission:
S03 Ep 03 Trouble in the Sticks UXSys 659842 (Incidentals) Phase 2
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: After the Away Team Returns from the Safe Planet
[ON]
Dr Cahill said on it Captain as she went to the Turbolift in a few minutes she exited and went to Sick Bay.
Dr Cahill came in on the fly. Report as she came over and started checking the patient I am Dr Cahill how are you doing? What is your name?
Give me a report on the patient condition. Dr Kulahiwa replied, "Patient is responsive and alert. Is about to communicate effectively and is very tense."
Dr Cahill entered the room in protective gear till she finishes her preliminary exam to determine if she were carrying a Bluegill.
"I am Dr Cahill and you are on the Tomcat in Sick Bay. We are here to help you ok?"
Jessie had been beamed into the sickbay and was surprised to be in a different place from the blonde engineer. She looked around like a caged animal, still trying to adjust to her new environment. She barely registered the doctor was talking to her but saw her talking and waiting for a response. "I...I'm...ok...I just...everyone...."
She moves carefully to prevent startling her and looked at the back of her neck then check some other diagnostic tests. When she was sure of her findings she removed her hood and spoke. "Release the forcefield patient is all clear no infection is detected. Can you tell me what you were doing when the team found you?"
"I was hiding in the storage cabinet," Jessie said, finally, glad she wasn't poking and prodding. She had pretty auburn hair, green eyes, and aside from the dirt and sweat, would be pretty for a 19-year-old, vaguely like the old Earth actress Noell Coet. She choked up a bit as her eyes began watering again. She sniffed and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. "My parents told me to stay there in case the....the..."
"I want you to see our ship's counsellor to be sure you are alright. In the meantime let's get you some food," the Doctor said, trying to be as consoling as possible.
Lamia walked into Sickbay just as the reference to the patient needing to see a Counsellor was spoken. She waited for Cahill to step back from the biobed, smiling as she greeted both Cahill and the young woman. “Well, that was good timing if I do say so myself!”
Cahill replied, "You are safe and in the Tomcat in our Sickbay. You require food and water but physically.
The nurse brings her something to eat and drink then get her some clean clothing. She can shower in a little bit.
Hi Lamia, she is ok physically but a little malnourished and dehydrated. I have not got her name yet.
Lamia nodded as she looked towards their guest, she looked traumatized and she wasn’t surprised. She offered a warm smile as she moved closer. “I’m Lamia Arderne, one of the ship’s Counsellor’s. I’m here to help you, can you tell me your name?”
She sniffed again, and her breath wavered a bit, a sign she had been crying just a little, as were her slightly red and puffy eyes. Her auburn hair reflected a bit of red in the sickbay lighting, tangled and askew. "J...Jessie. McCoy," she replied, her breathing steadying a little. "What ship is this? "
"You’re aboard the USS Tomcat," Lamia wanted to put Jessie at ease so kept her tone gentle and warm. “You don’t have to be afraid, you’re safe here Jessie. I’ll be here to help you get through this.”
"Are there any infected people on this ship?" Jessie asked quietly as she tucked some of her long hair behind an ear. Her clothes were faded and dirty, and needed changing, having spent a few days in them. Her trepidation was clear, and her voice quivered a little as she spoke. "Is the other planet clear of the zombies?"
“There are no infected on the ship” Lamia offered a reassuring smile. “The Captain isn’t willing to risk the security of the ship by having any infected people onboard, so you don’t have to worry. As for the planet, I’m afraid I haven’t heard.”
Dr Cahill replied, "I want you and Dr Hale to work with her. Find out any information she may have that may assist our current mission. She seems to trust you, Lamia."
Lamia nodded. “I’ll do my best Doctor” she smiled at Jessie. “Do you think you could help us, Jessie?”
The young girl took a wary moment to respond, but she finally spoke up cautiously, "I think so. What do you all need? I'm just a kid. You're Star fleet, right?"
Lamia nodded. “Yes, that’s right” she smiled warmly. “Don’t worry you won’t be asked to do anything, or go anywhere just tell us what you remember. The slightest detail could help us.”
Ensign Hale approached the area with quiet footsteps, reviewing the feed from Jessie's biobed on his PADD. Noting that she had been checked for parasitic infection. He sidled up next to Dr Cahill and spoke quietly so he wouldn't disturb Lamia's work. "I apologize for not arriving sooner sir, I was rather preoccupied."
Cahill replied, "That is alright. I want you and Lamia to work with her to find out what you can. Also, keep an eye on her Bio recordings. She is suffering from PTSD, sometimes there are medical triggers with it as well as mental triggers.
She is malnourished and dehydrated. So she needs food and fluids. But otherwise strong for what she has been through.
I may have to return to the Bridge to act as XO is why I want you helping out with her.
"Of course sir, you have pressing duties to attend to." Hale assented. "We will get her back into excellent physical shape soon enough. Healing the mind is of course a process that can move much more slowly." He looked over to Lamia and Jessie, concentrating on the pair with an intense focus for a moment. Making his way over he began taking discreet measurements, commanding the bed's sensors with his PADD. He added a quiet "Don't mind me," in case they continued their conversation.
“You are correct of course, Doctor” Lamia offered a smile. “Psychological matters take their own time, they can’t be rushed or forced.” She looked at Jessie. “Whilst you’re here with us I’ll be here for you whenever you need me.”
It took her a moment, she was studying Lamia for a bit before replying, "Thanks. I'm still a bit uneasy. Maybe a snack or something would help settle my stomach."
“Sure” Lamia nodded, walking over to the replicator she ordered a mixed platter of warm food and brought it back. “If you’d like anything else just let me know.”
"That smells good," she said, as she took it and had a few bites of the warm food, the first she'd had in days. She just savoured the taste, despite it being replicated food rather than real grown food.
Lamia smiled as she watched Jessie eat, she could only imagine what the poor girl had gone through. “Don’t rush it, no one will take your food away. There’s plenty more where that came from.”
After a few moments, Jessie slowed down her eating, her stomach finally not aching for the first time in days. "Well, my parents..." she began, her voice wavering for a moment before she repeated herself, trying to control her emotions, "my parents were scientists. They were working on a subspace transporter. If we could find out how to get it working, we might be able to save huge amounts of time going from planet to planet. They actually had a breakthrough and were on the verge of getting intra-solar-system subspace transport working. Like going from Earth to the moon in seconds rather than minutes, or Earth to Mars in the time it takes to knock on a door."
“Wow! That’s some tech” Lamia looked at Hale. “Do you know if their research was saved?”
"Just knowing that it's possible puts us on the way to replicating your parents' feat, even if their notes are lost." Hale offered in solidarity. "They've made a significant contribution to science and our understanding of the universe already."
Jessie looked between them and looked down. She was a bit scared to admit anything about her parents' work, but Starfleet was Starfleet, and she believed they could be trusted. "Well, I think it was saved," Jessie said after a few moments. "That blonde engineer said something about bringing up our black box from our computer. That should have everything. The calculations and specifics are way past me, but something to do with interacting with gravity and subspace," she said, struggling to remember all the technobabble her father would talk about over dinner, gushing about the science as if it were the latest holo-novel or something cool.
"I think the other black box is on the planet my parents were on, at the receiving end of the transporter," Jessie said.
