Dear Josefina,

I enjoyed our coffee this morning.

There was something I meant to bring up though and forgot to. I’ve been assigned to the SAR mission to recover Fleet Captain Somers. I’m a bit nervous about my phaser skills. I know I’m competent but I’d like to have a bit of practice with someone who knows what they’re doing.

Can you help me?

Thank you,

Jane

Dear Jane,

I enjoyed having coffee with you as well. I am available to put you through your refresher course, right now if you would like that. I can pick you up at your quarters and we can go from there.

You are welcome.

Joe

Joe,

Sounds perfect. See you soon!

Jane

The chime of Jane's quarters could be heard, letting her know that someone was there. On the other side of the door was Joe, waiting for Jane to open it. She at first was surprised that Jane had made this request, but Joe didn't mind at all. In fact it made her feel pretty darned good, especially giving her some more time in the presence of Jane.

Jane didn't call out for her guest to come in. Instead, knowing it was Joe, she made her way to the door and opened it herself. She was ready to go.

"Fancy meeting you here," she joked. "Thanks again for agreeing to help me today. Shall we?"

Joe's smile was rather radiant, and she replied. "Well I just happened to be passing by." she teased back, "And yes, let's get to your practicing. I've got a time slot booked for us in the holo-suite. Its ready and waiting for us."

When the two ladies arrived, Joe keyed in the code she wanted and when the door was opened, she stepped in. There were targets of various distances. There was even an area much like situational training. "I figured we'd just go the whole works if you want or we can change it up."

The scenery was set to be out of doors. "Won't be a good work out if we didn't simulate what you could possibly run into. That will be after the target practice."

“Sounds good,” Jane agreed. “I’ve done phaser training before, but it was just normal proficiency training. So anything extra you can give me will help. Plus, frankly, it’s a matter of confidence. I’ll feel better knowing that you’ve given me a refresher. And I’ve never done this kind of situational training, so I’m glad to learn.”

Nearby was a rack with a few different phaser types. Jane knew which one she would be using on the mission: the standard Type 2 hand phaser. She picked one up, keeping the operational end pointed down and away from Joe, and checked the settings. “Alright. I’m ready.”

Joe nodded, "Okay start with the closest target and then work towards the longest range. And... begin." at this moment, Joe was all business for this part of the training. She wanted to see how well Jane did.

Jane took the stance she was trained to use, knees bent, one leg slightly forward, and held her phaser toward the targets, and started firing. Red-orange beams lanced from her weapon and struck the closest target, followed by others further away. Of the five, numbers three and five missed.

Joe took a look at the targets missed and then walked over to Jane. "Okay, I noticed something on your other shots, you were more comfortable, but I think you ended up moving slightly too much to the left. Perhaps you can try this." She stepped behind Jane reaching out and adjusting her stance. "Okay try an experimental shot there."

The doctor felt goosebumps on her neck as the marine stood so close and adjusted her stance and aim, hands briefly touching her arms and legs. The distraction was momentary, however, and Jane found her mark. "Yeah it already feels better. I feel like I'm more stable as I fire."

"Oh good." Joe replied with a smile, "Now take a few more shots then we go to the next part." the marine watching once more at how her accuracy was. Joe was also admiring Jane as she held the weapon, she got her mind back to focus though as they were training.

Jane did as instructed. A few more shots, hitting the targets with about 85% accuracy, up quite a bit from before. She grinned at Joe for how much better she was doing. "Alright, what's next?"

Joe thought for a moment, "We've got several choices, I am the hunter and you avoid my capturing you. The other is we work together and we have some opponents who will be coming for us. The object is to make to here." Joe pulling out her PaDD and showing Jane the encampment. "A possible scenario where we make it to get a hostage out of imprisonment. Which would you like?"

"I like the idea of you hunting me," Jane said before realizing what she'd said and blushing hard. "I-I mean...oh you know what I mean. That sounds like fun." She checked her phaser's setting. It was the holodeck, with its safety protocols, but it was better to be safe than sorry. "Alright, I'm on minimum stun. So what's my goal then? Is it still to get to that encampment without you catching me?"

Joe smiled at Jane. "Yes, that is the goal, to get to that encampment and also keep me from capturing you. And if you are captured try to get away from me. Its a full sort of training. If you are captured, it will be your goal to get away, and make for safety." she glanced at Jane, "do you think you will be able to do that? Do what you need to do, to get away?"

“I think so,” Jane answered. “And if I fail, you can tell me what I did wrong.” Rather than wait for any further instructions, she snatched Joe’s PADD and bolted into the holo-forest. Now she had a map and a brief head start. She had to get quickly to the gulley, where she knew she could lay low for a moment and evade Joe.

To be continued….
