Mission: S3 Episode 5: Diplomatic Incident/Hydaransz Again (Main)
Location: Messhall

[On]

Thex was feeling happy with herself as she walked down the corridor. She always did after dancing. She could feel eyes upon her as she made her way back to her quarters. Not that she minded. Not every day they'd see an Andorian dressed as an Orion blade dancer. Well other than the bladed heels which she carried in her hands. She was not fixing the holes in the carpet they would make.

Her roommate was out as she walked in though her eyes were drawn to the blinking computer. Dax wanted to know if she was available for dinner. Sending her a reply of yes the blue girl headed for the sonic shower.

It wasn't long before the Andorian was out again arriving at the ship's mess hall clad in a dark tank top, black jeans and knee-high boots.

Looking around she looked for Dex wondering where she was.

Dex stood and waved as she had already gotten a table. “Over here” she called.

Thex let out a smile as she walked over. " Nice to see you Dex. How have you been?" she enquired.

“Busy!” exclaimed Dex rather brusquely, then her tone softened. “And you, are you settling in?”

" Very." Thex replied as she sat down at the table. " Been meeting my boss and pulling the gell packs out."

“I must admit I have not yet spoken to your boss yet. I am still very new myself. You must be hungry Thex, she took a menu and handed it to her. What would you like?” She asked.

" I've just been dancing for an hour I'm famished," Thex said as her eyes gazed over the menu. " Oh I could go for the meat feast pizza."

Dex waved the waiter over, “we’ll have one meat feast pizza, large and I think I will have the R’Ugant stew please, very hot and some soda bread. What do you want to drink Thex?” She asked.

" A large soda will do and I mean large." Thex said to the waiter. " So Dex how has medbay been?" She enquired to her friend.

Dex smiled as she opened the bottle of wine she had ordered and poured herself a large glass. “Busy? Not really but it seems so to me, it takes some time to get used to how Dr Cahill likes things run. The jobs pretty much made up of the same things until it’s’ not.” She laughed. “I’m waiting for the first injuries or illnesses come in from the missions. I have been thrust into the CMO role until she returns.”

The large pizza and the stew were delivered and Dex put her napkin on her knee and took a drink of wine..

" As I said I've been pulling out the gell packs." Thex said as she took her pizza and spikled on some parmesan cheese. " I'm sure you do well in the med bay."

“Thank you Thex, it’s just a case of getting to know everyone then it will be easier to fit in. I haven’t met the CMO yet which is always a trial. If we don’t get on the that can cause a load of problems.” She took a bite of her stew and a sip of wine. Wiping her mouth with the snowy white napkin. “So, tell me about yourself?” She asked.

" The abridged or full version?" Thex replied with a grin on her face.

“Whichever version you want to give me, I am genuinely interested.” Dex sipped her wine.

" Well." Thex said as she thought through how to start. " I was born to a quad on andoria who happen to belong to a dooms day cult. I never even stepped outside the compound until i was twelve and even then that was to hunt. Hated every second of it so when I was sixteen i bolted it. Kept running and never looked back. Found my way to the nearest city and bumbled into the Starfleet recruitment office. I was on a ship for earth within a week."

She paused as she took a drink. " I found it hard at the academy. I was an angry young woman. Fortunately, Nainaa found me and managed to screw my head on straight. I managed to pass with honours and joined the fleet. Been there ever since."

“Wow, sounds pretty brutal, never had a normal childhood. I’m sorry Thex. May I ask what you want to get out of your Starfleet career?”

" What everyone wants i guess. A chance for adventure, friendship and possibly get to have a ship of my own one day. What about you what do you want from the fleet and why did you join?" Thex replied.

“What does every physician want to do, save lives, stop pain. Try to fill up this emptiness I feel inside.” She shrugged, laughed and drained her glass.

" No luck in the relationships department?" Thex guessed as she enjoyed her food.

Dex put her fork down. “I was married to a wonderful man and had a little girl….they were, they were killed..a few years ago now. So, no I have not found anyone I would wish to be in a relationship with.” She picked up her glass and took a drink. “And you?” She asked.

" I'm sorry I've gone and put my foot in it haven't I?" Thex replied her antenna drooping slightly at how sensitive a subject it must have been for Dex.

Shon sighed, “no do not worry about it Thex, it is just an answer to a question that is all.” She smiled “what about you, any beau waiting in the wings, male or female?”

" Depend on how you mean. You do know my species has four genders? " Thex enquired. "Because I've had no luck with forming a quad. Had quite a few playmates in my time though. " She added with a grin.

Shon laughed ruefully, so you’re telling me you can live and have relationships with four different genders at a time? Phew that’s some family group.”

" Just the four. Zhen, Shen,Chan and Thaan. " Thex explained. " Need all four of them to create a zygote. Which sadly is the reason for my people's population crisis. A shrinking fertility window and more of us out among the stars..."

Shon ate some more. “What is your government doing about it?” She asked.

" What they can, but with the federation laws against genetic engineering the easiest way out of this mess are closed. Genetic screening is required for a marriage to prevent the problem from getting worse." Thex explained.

“It sounds very complicated. I am surprised your people don’t secede from the Federation if genetic engineering is needed. I do take issue with the Federation over this. “ Shon finished her plate and sat back. “Have you spoken with the Counsellor about this?”

" Some of the more ultra-nationalist groups have called for that. Worse they blame the federation for it in the first place." Thex added as she played with her food slightly. " And yes I have talked with the counsellors. Though I will admit my dancing does more to settle the nagging thoughts in the back of my head."

Dex sat back in her chair bugging her glass of wine. “I don’t think you can feel responsible for the failures of your government Thex, you have your own life to live and it sounds like you need to dance through it!” She exclaimed laughing. “Do you dance alone or is it a class, what sort of dancing is it? Sorry to be so nosey.”

" No need to apologise you're not being nosey," Thex replied with a smile. " As for dancing, I've done several. I did some cheerleading back at the academy, but my main passion is two styles of Orion dancing. The first being that of the animal woman which is the one most of the galaxy knows the Orions for. The second is that of a blade dancer a less well know dance, but one that need a lot more skill to perform well."

“I would like to come with you one day? it sounds interesting” she asked. “I am sorry but my duty shift begins soon, I hope we can do this again sometime soon.”

"Of course real life comes first." Thex said as she stayed to finish her meal. " I'll talk to you later."

“Hope so” said Shon.

With that Thex stayed to finish her food. As soon as she finished she headed for her quarters for a well earned rest.
